Tell us a bit about Find Us Lost and how it all started?
I’m a travel photographer and full-time blogger. It all began in 2016, when I moved from California to Amsterdam with my husband. At the time, I was working as a marketing manager in Los Angeles. It was always a dream of mine to live in Europe and travel more frequently. Before we settled in Amsterdam, we set off on a three-month road trip together and drove over 6,000 kilometres through the Balkans and southern Europe. I was taking photos every day and sharing them on Instagram. One thing led to another, and by the time we arrived in Amsterdam, I started a blog to share travel guides and photography tips. Most recently, I launched a travel print shop on my site with photos from around the world. I have always had a passion for photography, but never thought I could turn it into my career.
Tell us about Henri and how they came into your life?
This year obviously took a toll on many of us, myself included. Working in the travel industry, I went from taking 2-3 trips per month to none at all. The one thing I felt that was missing from my life the past few years was a dog. Slowing down made me realize I want to focus more on trips close to home when travel picks up again, so it felt like the right time for us. The plan was to wait until the end of the year, but I saw one photo of Henri and I was smitten. He is a rescue from Texas, the state with the highest rate of kill shelters in the U.S. I needed him, and he needed me.
How does having a dog fit into your general working day?
Henri keeps me to a routine! Working from home means it can be hard to shut off or take breaks. I love waking up in the morning and walking him around our neighbourhood in Amsterdam. He loves his bed, but he’s also a big cuddle and will insist on sleeping on my lap when I’m on my computer. The other day he jumped over my shoulder during a zoom call to get into my chair. It definitely took the person on the other end by surprise.
When you’re not working where do you like to head out to with the dog?
Henri gets along really well with other dogs and loves to run. If I have a free afternoon, we’ll walk down to the Vondelpark and visit the dog area in the centre. We also go for off-leash walks in the Westerpark. He has to greet every dog that walks by, of course.
What essentials do you always have on you when heading out for a dog walk, and what do you carry them in?
I throw his favourite treats, a squeaky ball, and his Kintail’s rain jacket in a backpack when we go out (you never know when the weather will turn in Amsterdam!).
What adventures do you have planned with Henri for later this year?
I’m eager to take him to the beach in the Netherlands now that it’s the holidays, as he’s never been. If it snows this winter, we may also grab a car for the day and drive to one of the nearby national parks. We’re staying close to home at the moment. I’m sure that will change in 2021 — so I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
