Kelp seaweed contains every mineral required for health, it is especially good to stimulate a healthy coat. Nettles are rich in chlorophyll, iron, calcium, potassium and vitamin C which also help maintain healthy skin.
Kelp and Nettle Dog Treats
2 Cups of Spelt Flour
1 Cup of Oat Bran
1 Egg (beaten)
1 teaspoon of dried kelp
Large handful of fresh nettles (you can use fresh spinach if nettles are unavailable)
1 Apple (quartered and stalk removed)
½ Cup Water
Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper.
First prepare the nettles - Quickly blanching them in a pot of boiling water will deaden the sting. But leave them for too long and like spinach, the leaves will wilt too far, and start to lose flavour, texture and goodness. Treat the cooked nettle leaves as you would treat cooked spinach leaves.
Combine the flour and oat-bran together
Place the apple and herbs into a blender with the ½ cup of water and blend until liquid
Pour the apple and herb liquid into the flour and oat mixture and mix until combined, then slowly add the beaten egg. The mixture needs to firm and easy to scoop but not too wet (if the mixture is to wet then add a little more water and if it is too wet add a little more oat bran)
Using a teaspoon scoop the mixture onto the lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until firm and golden
Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.
Please make sure the biscuits are completely cool before giving to your dog!
